Victorian Day Portraits

Tuesday, April 29, 2008

The Victorian era wasn't always a happy time for children - as these portraits from today go to show. Scroll down for a gallery where you can see a slideshow. The password's the same as normal. Email Mr Millington at school if you'd like the full resolution image to print or keep. More pictures from Victorian Day coming during this week.

Zoetropes

Monday, April 28, 2008

One of our Victorian Day activities tomorrow will be making a zoetrope. This is an optical toy that appears to make images move - a bit like a flickbook - and was invented in the 1830s. You can read more about them here.

There are lots of different instructions on the web explaining how to make your own zoetrope. These are the ones we'll be using in school - look towards the bottom of the page for printable templates. There are also instructions on the BBC site and even some from the US that were made in 1906! Click the picture below to download this as a pdf that you can print out.

This site also has lots of info about other similar toys, many of which were invented during the Victorian era.

Great Fire of London

Friday, February 8, 2008

Do you know:

  • when it happened?
  • how the fire started?
  • why it spread so quickly?
  • how many people and buildings were affected?
  • how it was stopped?
  • what happened afterwards?
Obviously, people didn't have cameras in those days, but there were artitsts! Click on the picture to see an artist's impression of before and after.
